Wednesday Workshops
Throughout our January/February session of classes, we will be offering Mini Workshops on Wednesday evenings that will each focus on a different specific topic. These 1-night, 1-hour workshops are an excellent option for owners who have very specific goals or problems they want to work on, or whose schedules don't allow them to commit to full 6-week classes.
All workshops will be on Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30pm
1 hour - $25/dog - limit 6 dogs
No prerequisite training requirements
(unless otherwise noted)
January 7th: Fetching Fun
This workshop will cover a fun foundation game to encourage your dog to fetch! This can be a great way to teach fetch to a dog who doesn't know it, to troubleshoot issues in your fetch game, or to start teaching your dog to fetch different items or take the items to specific locations if they already understand the basics of the fetch game.
January 14th: Settle & Stay
This workshop will cover the steps to teach to settle and to stay settled using a relaxed down position and/or a dog bed. A valuable skill for dogs who struggle with impulse control! This workshop is open to 8 dog/handler teams.
January 21st: Reliable Recalls
This workshop will cover tips and exercises to get your dog recalling to you more reliably, as well as covering common mistakes that might be undermining your recall training!
January 28th: Leisurely Leash Skills
This workshop will cover methods and exercises to get your dog walking more politely and cooperatively on leash.
Prerequisites: Completion of Play as the Way 1 or Dogmanship 1
February 4th: Confident Canine
This workshop will cover games and exercises to help build confidence in your reserved, shy, or underconfident dog. (Please note this workshop is not recommended for extreme cases of anxiety or fearfulness. Consider individualized private training instead.) This workshop is open to 8 dog/handler teams.
February 11th: Cooperative Care
This workshop will cover techniques to create positive associations with handling for basic care, such as grooming, nail trims, veterinary exams, etc., and to increase your dog's cooperation with these procedures. This workshop is open to 8 dog/handler teams.
February 18th: Polite with People
This workshop will focus on teaching dogs to greet people more politely. We will discuss how to help your dog feel more calm when greeting people, reward your dog for appropriate behavior, and address problematic behaviors like jumping. Dogs must be able to wait politely on a tether, place cot, or in a crate. Class participants will take turns working with their own dog, and then being "greeters" for others.
Prerequisites: Completion of S.T.A.R. Puppy, Dogmanship 1, or Play as the Way 1 class.
February 25th: Doggy, Drop It!
This workshop will focus on teaching your dog a command to drop an item out of their mouth. We will cover strategies to increase cooperation, as well as problem solving ideas for dogs who struggle to give items up. Please bring to the workshop a variety of items your dog might want to hold, chew on, or play with - toys, bones, or items your dog likes to steal! (This class is NOT appropriate for dogs who display resource guarding or aggression when they have an item they don't want to relinquish.)
